The MTN Group, which is Africa’s leading mobile network provider, announced on Thursday that they experienced a cyberattack resulting in the exposure of sensitive customer information for users in specific regions. However, their primary networks, billing infrastructure, and monetary services continue to be safeguarded against such breaches.

An unidentified third party claimed to have accessed parts of MTN’s systems, the company said in a statement posted on its website.

While the scope of the breach is still under investigation, MTN reassured stakeholders that there is no indication that customer accounts or digital wallets were directly compromised.

“ нет признаков угрозы для нашей критической инфраструктуры, основных платформ и услуг MTN”, — заявила компания, добавив, что ее «основная сеть, системы биллинга и финансовая инфраstructure остаются безопасными и полностью функционирующими».

The telecommunications powerhouse based in Johannesburg, serving 280 million subscribers spanning 19 nations, has informed both the South African Police Service and the Hawks, a specialized crime division. They are also working closely with regulatory bodies in the impacted regions.

MTN is also contacting affected customers to comply with local regulatory standards.

“We have notified the appropriate national authorities and will keep providing updates regularly as we collaborate closely with them and law enforcement agencies to assist in their investigations,” the operator stated.

As part of its ongoing efforts to mitigate potential risks, MTN is in the process of notifying affected customers in accordance with local legal and regulatory requirements.

The firm recommended its clients to adopt precautionary measures to protect their data.

The suggested steps include setting up fraud alerts on credit reports, keeping applications updated, employing robust and distinct passwords, and being wary of unexpected messages that contain dubious links.

MTN also encouraged its clients not to disclose confidential details like passwords, PINs, and single-use codes via telephone calls, messages, or emails.

When possible, the firm suggests turning on multi-factor authentication for enhanced protection.
