Universal Blue, the creator of the gaming-oriented Linux distribution Bazzite, announced on Wednesday that it’s joining forces with several other organizations to form the Open Gaming Coalition (OGC). This collaboration aims to enhance the Linux gaming ecosystem by centralizing efforts on key aspects like kernel patches, input tools, and vital gaming packages, including gamescope.
Other founding members of the OGC include Nobara, ChimeraOS, Playtron, Fyra Labs, PikaOS, ShadowBlip, and Asus Linux. Having a diverse range of distributions available is one of the most appealing features of using Linux; however, by pooling resources on crucial gaming components, the user experience is likely to improve. This will lead to better hardware compatibility, minimize redundant work, and foster a more cohesive Linux gaming environment. As noted in Bazzite’s announcement, “a win for one project becomes a win for everyone.”
It’s important to highlight that Bazzite will undergo some changes as part of this initiative. The distribution is transitioning to the OGC kernel, replacing HHD with InputPlumber as its input framework, and incorporating features like RGB and fan control into the Steam UI. Bazzite also mentioned that, “We’ll be sharing patches we’ve made to various Valve packages with the OGC and attempting to upstream everything we can.”
