Apple Alerts 100 Countries’ iPhone Users to Sophisticated Spyware Threat

Posted on

Apple has alerted iPhone users across more than 100 nations about fresh instances of mercenary spyware attacks, warning them regarding these threats aimed at people due to who they are or what they do, as reported by TechCrunch.

Included among those informed were Italian journalist Ciro Pellegrino and Dutch political commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek, both of whom made their notifications public on Wednesday. Pellegrino penned an article for the Italian publication Fanpage, whereas Vlaardingerbroek released a video detailing her encounter.

The alerts indicate a specific effort to jeopardize the user’s iPhone from afar. The message stated, “Apple has identified a focused assault using mercenary surveillance software aimed at your device.”

In his piece, Pellegrino mentioned that Apple notified him through an email indicating up to 150 countries might have been impacted. Starting in 2024, Apple started sending out these alerts with the intention of warning users who were likely targets of complex, state-sponsored or hired hacker operations.

“The attacks seem to be aimed at you particularly due to your identity or actions,” states an earlier Apple alert, which also notes that although complete assurance is challenging, the firm has “strong conviction” in their warning mechanisms.

The latest warnings have emerged as worries about spyware connected to private companies continue to grow. In earlier reports this year, Fanpage indicated that one of Pellegrino’s associates was also attacked separately. This particular incident was attributed by WhatsApp to Paragon Solutions, an Israel-based spyware company.

Recently, social engineering attacks targeting human rights activists and pro-Ukraine groups have utilized messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal.

Apple hasn’t revealed the identity of the parties responsible for the recent surge in attacks. The company has been reached out to for clarification, and further updates will be provided as additional details come to light.
