The Nintendo Switch 2 is ready to go right out of the box, but it really shines with the right accessories. Some of these extras are more important than others, especially if you’re making early purchases. For instance, a case and a screen protector are essential for safeguarding your console against scratches and drops. If you’re not a fan of the Joy-Con 2’s feel, a budget-friendly wireless controller might also be a worthwhile investment.
While a microSD Express card can expand your game library, the console’s 256GB of internal storage should be sufficient for most players—unless you’re downloading hefty titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or Madden 26. Some accessories might not offer enough value to justify their cost, so skip the Joy-Con 2 steering wheel add-ons. Since the Switch 2 and its games can get expensive, we’ve rounded up affordable accessory options for every budget, starting with a handy starter kit of recommendations.
Our Seven Must-Have Switch 2 Accessories
The Best Switch 2 Controllers
Our list of top Switch 2 controllers is constantly evolving. Initially, it featured just a few alternatives to Nintendo’s good yet flawed $90 Pro controller. Now, our picks cover a variety of budgets, with all candidates offering better internal hardware than the Pro. At a minimum, you’ll get a controller equipped with Hall effect or TMR joysticks that won’t wear out over time. Many also come with customizable features like rear paddles, adjustable trigger distances, and swappable face buttons.
Currently, the EasySMX S10 stands out as the best wireless controller for most Switch 2 gamers. It balances comfort with great rumble feedback, a floating eight-way direction pad, and support for motion controls and amiibo. However, some buttons are awkwardly placed, and the design may not appeal to everyone.
While not strictly a controller, I can’t recommend 8BitDo’s USB Adapter 2 enough if you own multiple consoles. If you have an Xbox or PS5 and want to avoid buying a dedicated Switch 2 controller, this $20 adapter is the way to go. Simply plug it into the Switch 2 dock (or the console using a USB-A to C adapter) and pair your existing controller. The DualSense rumble and motion controls work flawlessly, with keyboard remapping available like on an official Switch controller. GuliKit’s Hyperlink 2 wireless adapter functions similarly and is usually a little cheaper ($16.99 at publish time), offering an easy pairing process and a reliable connection.
The Best Switch 2 Cases and Mounts
The Killswitch is an excellent companion for the Switch 2, whether you mainly play handheld or docked. This case wraps around the console’s back, with detachable parts that enhance the Joy-Con 2 grip for added comfort. It also provides strong protection against scratches and minor damage while maintaining flexibility as a hybrid console.
Each Killswitch includes a USB-C dock adapter that connects to the Switch 2 dock, allowing you to use it with your TV. Although it can be a bit tricky to align the USB-C jack with the adapter, it gets easier with practice.
The Dbrand Killswitch is worth considering for those who can afford it, as it enhances handheld comfort and allows for Joy-Con detachment. For a close second, check out Jsaux’s ModCase, which fits securely onto the console. While you can’t detach the Joy-Cons or use the kickstand while it’s on, it does add comfort with bulkier grips. It features a rear protrusion for attaching various “mods,” with the basic $29.99 kit including a kickstand that works better on tables and a strap for holding a power bank. The $59.99 Ultimate kit has additional features, including a faceplate for screen protection and a phone mount.
For those seeking a slim option, the Tomtoc FancyCase is the best zip-up case available. It’s more durable than other options and includes a screen cover that doubles as storage for 12 game cartridges. Its design is low-profile, perfect for gamers who want a discreet look.
If you prefer to relax while gaming, consider Mechanism’s Gaming Pillow, which holds the Switch 2 at eye level while you’re seated. Detach the Joy-Con for additional comfort or connect a wireless controller. This accessory is compatible with several other devices too.
Jsaux’s OmniCentro dock is an innovative all-in-one wall charger and dock for $39.99, featuring a USB-C port, a USB-A port, and an HDMI cable. Its 65W USB-C output is more than enough for the Switch 2, and it boasts 4K capability at 60fps, which is great for other devices as well.
The Best Switch 2 Cameras
If you use Nintendo’s GameChat feature, having a webcam is a smart idea. The best option is usually the least expensive model that’s guaranteed to work with the Switch 2. Most Logitech webcams are compatible, along with Elgato’s updated Facecam MK.2. While it’s pricier, it’s a reliable choice if you’ll use it with a PC too. Be mindful that the Switch 2 streams at lower video quality during gameplay, so there’s no need to splurge on high-end models if you’re only using it for gaming.
The Best Switch 2 Portable Batteries
The Switch 2 offers more power than its predecessor but doesn’t require a ton of energy to charge, even during gameplay. A power bank with at least 20W will provide fast charging speeds in handheld mode. Most USB-C batteries will deliver between 15-17W of power (or less) while gaming. With a 20W battery, it takes nearly 90 minutes to reach 69% from zero. You’ll likely drain your USB-C battery faster while playing, but plenty of options are available to fit your charging needs.
The Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB, although those aren’t on the market yet. Current options include 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and even some 1TB cards. I recommend grabbing the cheapest microSD Express card, as they all maintain similar speeds. Samsung’s P9 is an affordable option, with the 256GB version occasionally dropping to $34.99.
Best Video Glasses for Switch 2
If you travel frequently or want to experience enhanced immersion, consider AR glasses. They place the screen right in front of your eyes and often come with head-tracking capabilities. Viture’s $499 Luma Pro and Pro mobile gaming dock are solid options, offering excellent brightness and contrast with physical adjustments for clarity.
Alternatively, Xreal’s $449 1S is also a good choice, though it requires the smaller Xreal Neo mobile dock for connectivity. Performance and comfort are comparable, but Xreal opts for software-based adjustments for interpupillary distance instead of a hardware solution, which might necessitate prescription lenses.
Other Cheap, Must-Have Switch 2 Accessories
Two additional items worth picking up for your Switch 2 are a screen protector and a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter. The screen is the console’s most delicate part, so it’s wise to invest around $10 in a multipack of tempered glass protectors. Brands like amFilm offer dependable options.
A USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter can significantly enhance your online gaming experience, particularly if you’re serious about multiplayer games. It’s also a handy tool for speeding up downloads, as the Switch 2’s Wi-Fi can be sluggish with bigger files. Plugging this adapter into either USB-C port will dramatically increase download speeds.
Update, January 12th: Updated to reflect current pricing and availability and several products, including Jsaux’s OmniCentro dock, Mechanism’s Gaming Pillow, and two pairs of video glasses.
