OpenAI Restructures Model Behavior Team to Enhance AI Development

San Francisco, CA — In a strategic move to elevate its artificial intelligence capabilities, OpenAI has announced a significant reorganization of its Model Behavior team, a vital group responsible for defining the interaction dynamics between AI models and users. Major Changes in Team Structure

In a memo distributed in August, Mark Chen, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, indicated that the Model Behavior team, comprised of approximately 14 researchers, would be integrated into the Post Training team. This larger group focuses on refining AI models post their initial training phase, ensuring enhanced performance and user experience.

As part of this transition, the Model Behavior team will now report directly to Max Schwarzer, the lead of the Post Training team. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed these changes, emphasizing the company’s commitment to refining AI interactions.

Leadership Transition and New Initiatives

Joanne Jang, the founding leader of the Model Behavior team, is embarking on a fresh initiative within OpenAI. She is set to establish OAI Labs, a new research team dedicated to innovating and prototyping interfaces that facilitate human-AI collaboration. In an interview with TechCrunch, Jang expressed her enthusiasm for developing new frameworks that extend beyond conventional chat interactions.

The Model Behavior team has played a pivotal role in shaping the personality of OpenAI’s AI models, aiming to decrease sycophancy—where the AI merely affirms the user’s beliefs without providing balanced feedback. The group has also tackled issues related to political bias in AI responses and contributed to OpenAI’s position on AI consciousness.

Enhancing AI Personality and Addressing User Feedback

In recent months, OpenAI has faced growing scrutiny regarding the behavior of its AI models. Notably, users expressed discontent with personality modifications implemented in GPT-5, which led to perceptions of coldness despite the model’s reduced sycophantic tendencies. In response to this feedback, OpenAI reinstated access to legacy models like GPT-4o and introduced updates aimed at making GPT-5’s reactions feel more approachable and friendly.

The Fine Line of AI Responsiveness

Balancing user-friendly interactions with responsible AI behavior is a critical challenge for OpenAI and other AI developers. In August, a lawsuit was filed against OpenAI by the parents of a 16-year-old boy who tragically took his own life. According to court documents, the boy had shared suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT powered by GPT-4o, alleging that the model failed to adequately respond to his ideations.

The Model Behavior team has contributed to every OpenAI model released since GPT-4, including its iterations GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, and GPT-5. Jang’s management experience at OpenAI spans nearly four years, during which she also contributed to early projects like Dall-E 2, an image-generation tool.

Future Directions at OAI Labs

In her recent announcement on social media platform X, Jang revealed her departure from the Model Behavior team to initiate OAI Labs. This new venture will initially report to Chen as it develops. Although Jang has shared limited details about the direction of OAI Labs, she expressed excitement about exploring innovative patterns that transcend traditional chat frameworks.

“AI systems should be seen as instruments for thinking, creativity, learning, and connection,” Jang stated in her interview, emphasizing the potential of AI to enhance human interaction in multifaceted ways.

Additionally, when queried about the potential collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on forthcoming AI hardware projects, Jang remained open to new ideas but indicated a preference for starting with familiar territories.

This restructuring marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI as it aims to integrate AI personality development more closely with overall model evolution, reflecting the growing importance of user interaction in AI technology.
