Reliable sources reported to WIRED that DOGE is focusing its recruitment efforts on technologists with prior government experience, including several individuals who departed under initiatives aimed at significantly reducing the federal workforce.

Targeted Recruitment for Technologists

According to insiders who provided information on the condition of anonymity, DOGE is particularly interested in hiring technology professionals who have a background in governmental roles. Notably, one candidate reported being informed that despite their recent exit from government service through the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP), they could still qualify for a position within the department.

DOGE is specifically seeking candidates for development, operations, software, and product roles for two-year appointments. Recruitment sources have indicated that the compensation range for these positions is competitive, falling between $120,000 and $195,000 annually.

Rigorous Application Process

The application process for DOGE involves multiple assessment stages, including an initial screening interview, a technical evaluation that candidates complete at home, and two subsequent interviews. Applicants are tasked with developing a tool to analyze federal regulations through the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR). A source familiar with the current structure stated that "the US DOGE Service and DOGE are essentially the same entity now." However, since the Trump administration took office, the original small team of technologists within the USDS has dwindled dramatically, creating challenges in attracting new talent.

Transforming Technical Roles within Government

As part of this transformation, members of the original DOGE task force, predominantly junior engineers, are now transitioning into permanent government positions within various federal agencies. Recently, Luke Farritor and Edward Coristine—who previously operated in the telecommunications sector—secured full-time roles at the General Services Administration (GSA).

Additionally, Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer and current leader within DOGE, is reportedly exploring a revamp of the Presidential Innovation Fellows program, designed to integrate technologists into government roles. This program has faced recruitment challenges in light of a government-wide hiring freeze. Shedd currently serves as the director of GSA’s Technology and Transformation Services (TTS), which offers technical expertise to various government agencies.

One GSA technology professional remarked, "Thomas Shedd and his leadership team have created challenges by letting most of their tech talent go. They now have projects they wish to advance, which necessitate qualified technical personnel."
