New police chief plans for increased use of robots and surveillance cameras
In an effort to decrease staffing levels, the new Hong Kong police commissioner aims to do so

is currently exploring the deployment of robotic canines and integrating the current network of surveillance cameras.
“We are exploring the possibility of using robots for catching thieves, performing various kinds of tasks, or going on patrols alongside us. This is the path we are currently pursuing,” he explained.

In the near future, a trial program will commence to deploy drones for certain high-altitude surveillance missions or in particular rural regions, possibly including remote border zones.
Robot dogs are currently being utilized in both China and the United States.
Various regions within Mainland China are now using robot dogs as part of their law enforcement efforts to boost effectiveness. Similarly, “Spot” robotic canines have been utilized in the United States since 2023.
Chow aims to increase the number of surveillance cameras through a program called “Smartview.” His ultimate objective is to gain access to footage from current camera systems operated by various governmental agencies, including those installed in intelligent street lamps.
Chow has previously mentioned that fostering a sense of responsibility among Hong Kong citizens to motivate them to uphold national security in their everyday activities was one of the main objectives during his term.
