Unlocking High Productivity: My Surprising Experience with Windows 11

Posted on

The biggest challenge to maintaining productivity is often the multitude of distractions we face throughout the day. Unlike interruptions from someone entering your workspace, these distractions largely stem from incessant notifications from applications, emails, and messages, which can significantly divert your concentration from critical tasks. To combat this, I have effectively utilized the built-in features in Windows 11 designed to minimize such disturbances.

### Enhancing Focus with Focus Sessions

One of the standout features in the Windows Clock app is the Focus Sessions tool, which is inspired by the Pomodoro technique. This method encourages individuals to divide their work into focused time blocks followed by brief breaks, providing a structured way to enhance concentration and productivity.

To begin using Focus Sessions, click the Start button, enter “Clock” in the search field, and select the app from the results. Within the Focus sessions tab, users can set their desired session length. While the default duration is 30 minutes, I personally find 60 minutes to be more effective for deeper engagement in tasks. Sessions can extend up to 240 minutes, and you have the option to include up to 8 breaks in between those intervals.

When you’re prepared to start, simply click on “Start focus session.” This action activates a timer on your screen that keeps track of your remaining work time while concurrently enabling the Do Not Disturb mode, which blocks any unnecessary notifications. This allows you to maintain your focus until your scheduled break. Additionally, if you prefer not to navigate through the Clock app each time, a quicker method exists: press Win + N to access the notification panel, where you can initiate a focus session with the default settings of 30 minutes and a 5-minute break.

### Silencing Notifications Through Do Not Disturb

Another powerful yet often overlooked productivity feature in Windows 11 is the Do Not Disturb functionality. While many users employ this feature on mobile devices during meetings or personal time, it is equally beneficial for silencing computer notifications, thus sustaining concentration during work sessions.

Windows 11 simplifies the activation of Do Not Disturb with a dedicated toggle. To enable this feature, click on the clock on the taskbar or press Win + N to open the notification panel, then click the bell icon located at the top right corner. A brief notification will appear, confirming that Do Not Disturb is now active.

Once activated, all pop-up notifications will be suppressed, allowing you to focus on the task at hand. Importantly, you won’t miss any critical updates; notifications are still accessible later in the notification panel. Users can also customize priority notifications, allowing alerts from specific applications, calls, or reminders to bypass Do Not Disturb mode. This can be set up by navigating to Start > Settings > System > Notifications and selecting “Set priority notifications.” From here, you can choose which applications have the capability to push notifications through even during Do Not Disturb mode.

However, it should be noted that Windows does not provide an automatic end time option for Do Not Disturb, which requires users to deactivate it manually afterward. Fortunately, you can schedule Do Not Disturb to activate automatically at designated times, such as during regular working hours, thus reducing the need for daily manual adjustments.

### Streamlining Power Settings for Optimal Performance

Productivity can take a hit if your laptop experiences slow performance or runs out of battery during important tasks. This area is often overlooked, making it essential to choose the appropriate power plan based on your working environment and requirements.

Windows 11 features three integrated power modes: Best Performance, Balanced, and Best Power Efficiency. The default setting is Balanced, which strives to provide sufficient power while conserving energy. Contrary to common belief, the Balanced mode is quite adaptable; it can enhance your CPU performance during demanding tasks while saving power during lighter activities.

For those who plan to work outside the reach of a charger, switching to Best Power Efficiency mode is advisable to extend battery life. To modify your power mode, go to Settings > System > Power & battery, and then use the drop-down menu under “On battery” to select Best Power Efficiency.

Additionally, make use of the Energy Saver feature during low battery scenarios. This can be turned on by clicking on the icons for network, volume, and battery in the taskbar, then toggling the Energy Saver option in the Quick Settings panel.

By utilizing these simple yet effective tools in Windows 11, I have experienced a significant enhancement in my productivity. By focusing more efficiently during work hours, I am able to complete tasks quicker, freeing up extra time for personal activities such as family time, health, or simply enjoying leisure without the stress of unfinished work.
