An urgent
recall
has been distributed for numerous UK laptops, smartphones, and smartwatches due to concerns they might burst into flames.
Amazon has been ordered to recall all products sent out by the Chinese firm Dorland.
According to the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the devices pose ‘a serious risk of fire and explosion’.
Should you have purchased one of the problematic devices, OPSS recommends waiting for further guidance from Amazon regarding the return and reimbursement procedure.
Dorland’s equipment is promoted as suitable for utilization in ‘explosive hazardous areas,’ like environments where flammable gases or substances are prevalent.
The firm asserted that its equipment was particularly well-suited for risky environments where explosions could occur, like those found in industries dealing with petroleum, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil depots, storage tanks, and similar locations containing flammable and explosive gases.
Nevertheless, OPSS discovered that “there is no proof that an adequate conformity assessment was conducted prior to the products being introduced into the market in Great Britain.”
Moreover, these devices lack all the necessary markings required for legal sale as explosion-proof equipment in the UK.
Based on Dorland’s website, the firm stands as ‘the premier producer of explosion-proof electrical automation equipment and intrinsically safe industrial explosion-proof communication devices in China, along with offering associated technologies and services.’
This is crucial since workers handling explosive substances must not use an ordinary mobile device.
Explosion-proof phones eliminate the danger of sparking or generating excessive heat which might cause an explosion by employing lower power settings and electrically insulated parts.
These products must undergo country-specific certification and testing procedures prior to being approved for sale with the ‘explosion proof’ designation.
Nevertheless, even though Dorland’s equipment was promoted and marketed as safe from explosions, the OPSS determined that it failed to comply with the necessary legal standards for sales in the United Kingdom.
Besides smartphones, the recall also encompasses laptops and smartwatches sold by Dorland, which were marketed as explosion-proof.
The OPSS notes that the products claim compatibility with Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous locations—areas where explosions are deemed probable.
The impacted devices encompass the ‘Dorland Extreme 5G Industrial Intrinsically Safe Smartphone Android 11’, the ‘Dorland Laptop EX NB09S 4G Industrial Intrinsically Safe EX Laptop’, and the ‘Dorland Smartwatch EX 02 Plus 4G Intrinsically Safe Watch’.
Once OPSS initiates the recall, Amazon will reach out to all impacted customers via email containing specific information regarding the recall.
Customers who have been impacted should notice a notification at the top of their ‘Your Orders’ page on the Amazon site.
This alert will direct users to their ‘Recall Information and Product Safety Notices’ page, where they can find specifics regarding how to return or receive a refund for the product.
The OPSS initiates product recalls for particular items available in the UK that are thought to endanger the well-being of British consumers.
For example, last year
A recall has been initiated for a portable charger available on Amazon.
following reports that it was expanding, catching fire, melting, overheating, or emitting smoke from customers.
Approximately 488,000 Charmast Power Banks that were sold from December 2018 to September 2024 were subject to this recall.
In such cases, impacted customers were warned to exercise caution when disposing of the batteries and could receive a complete reimbursement.
Dorland did not reply to requests for comments.
