TikTok Blocks Search Results for #SkinnyTok Amid Criticism Over Eating Disorder Promotion
In a significant move, TikTok has removed search results for the hashtag #SkinnyTok, a decision aimed at addressing concerns that certain content associated with this label was promoting disordered eating and other potentially harmful dieting behaviors.
Political Backing for the Initiative
France’s Minister of State for Digital Affairs, Clara Chappaz, has been a leading voice advocating against the #SkinnyTok hashtag. Since April, she has engaged with both French and European Union regulators to step up actions against such content. "These videos promoting extreme thinness are revolting and absolutely unacceptable," Chappaz stated, emphasizing the adverse effects of digital platforms when misused. "Digital tools are marvelous in terms of progress and freedom, but when used improperly, they can shatter lives… social networks cannot evade their responsibility."
Challenges of Content Moderation
While TikTok’s decision to block search results for certain hashtags signifies a positive direction, experts caution that it may merely hinder users seeking similar content. "Users are savvy," remarked Brooke Erin Duffy, a professor at Cornell University, in an interview with The New York Times. "They understand how to navigate these platforms and evade their content moderation systems."
This hashtag block is part of TikTok’s incremental strategy to manage content that may encourage eating disorders. In 2020, the platform implemented restrictions on advertisements that could promote a negative body image, including those for fasting apps and weight loss supplements.
Ongoing Initiatives for Mental Health Support
In a commitment to promote mental health and wellness, TikTok partnered with the National Eating Disorder Association in 2021, providing users with access to resources related to eating disorders. That same year, the platform revised its For You page algorithm to mitigate the effects of repetitive viewing related to harmful topics.
Through these initiatives, TikTok is attempting to strike a balance between fostering creativity and ensuring the safety and well-being of its users. As the conversation around digital responsibility continues, monitoring the impact of these measures remains crucial for the platform.
