The defence minister said his ministry has identified nine broad areas as part of the modernisation drive in the armed forces. He said the entire range of modernisation imperatives, including defence acquisition and procedural reforms, have been addressed.

“In pursuit of our need to modernise and remain relevant to the future, the Ministry of Defence has decided to observe 2025 as the year of reforms. This would aim at transforming our armed forces into a technologically advanced and combat-ready force capable of multi-domain integrated operations,” he said

“Nine major domains have been recognized, covering all aspects of modernization efforts such as defense procurement and process improvements. It gives me great pleasure to say that together, we are advancing considerably toward the objectives we’ve established,” he noted.

He stated that technology is not just a supporting factor but a crucial catalyst for operational success.

“Our military personnel should not just stay updated with technological advancements; they must also be at the forefront of these developments. It is essential for us to create affordable high-tech solutions and improve the combat capabilities of our armed forces,” he stated.

“India, like the rest of the globe, confronts a wide array of security issues. Specifically, our nation grapples with continuous threats along our northern and western frontiers. These concerns are exacerbated byproxy wars and terrorism originating from nearby regions known as hotbeds of such activities. Furthermore, the continuing strife in Western Asia coupled with geopolitical pressures around the Indo-Pacific area to our east significantly influence our comprehensive security strategy. Additionally, enhancing capabilities to tackle non-conventional security risks—such as natural calamities and consequences of climate change—is growing ever more crucial,” he stated.

He mentioned that the worldwide geopolitical landscape is characterized by significant upheaval, featuring swiftly changing alliances, disturbances, and ongoing disputes as common occurrences. Topics like de-globalization, strong nationalist tendencies, resource shortages, population displacements, food safety issues, environmental worries, and the risk of widespread disease were particularly prominent, he noted.

“Alongside this, we see the militarization of commerce and financial systems, coupled with concerns arising from the consolidation of supply chains, dominance in revolutionary technologies, and worries about the clarity of data exchange. Given these developments, it’s understandable that nations are shifting towards a more self-reliant approach and making independent choices, which contributes to the weakening of international organizations and frameworks. This transformation is happening right now as we observe,” he stated.

He mentioned that drone usage, for example, has surfaced in the Ukraine-Russia conflict almost as a new military branch, if not a revolutionary field of study.

“The bulk of soldier and equipment losses can be traced back neither to conventional artillery nor armored vehicles but to drone attacks. Additionally, space capabilities within the Low Earth Orbit are revolutionizing military intelligence, continuous surveillance, navigation, target acquisition, and communication, thereby elevating warfare to unprecedented heights. The impact of technological advancements on battlefields is truly astounding,” he stated.

“In this era of grey zone and hybrid warfare, cyber attacks, misinformation campaigns, and economic battles have turned into instruments capable of advancing political and military objectives without a single gunshot,” he further explained. (ANI)
