The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has emphasized the importance of viewing technology as an impartial tool that can hasten Nigeria’s socioeconomic progress.

During a virtual panel discussion called “Culture and Innovation: The Evolving Terrain and Technoculture,” Inuwa highlighted the significance of using technology to strike a balance between maintaining cultural heritage and fostering economic development.

The event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy together with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and UNESCO, offered a forum for participants to delve into how technology plays a pivotal role in driving both cultural shifts and economic changes.

Inuwa, who was represented by Barrister Emmanuel Edet, the Acting Director of Regulation and Compliance, emphasized that technology is fundamentally neutral—on its own, it has no inherent benefit or harm; instead, this depends on the intentions and strategies guiding its use.

He promoted the establishment of strong policies and partnerships to guarantee that technological advancements support Nigeria’s cultural legacy and development objectives.

With the growing impact of digital advancements on worldwide cultures and financial systems, Inuwa highlighted innovative platforms like Figma, Canva, and CorelDRAW—tools that integrate artificial intelligence to improve user interaction. Emphasizing the importance of preparing Nigerians with essential digital competencies, he stressed how mastering these resources can significantly contribute to their economic advancement.

He stated, “With this objective in mind, NITDA has set up digital learning centers across the country, offering education in emerging technologies.”

“The National Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) is also playing a pivotal role by offering training programs and creating tech hubs aimed at improving productivity and skill acquisition.”

Moreover, Inuwa introduced Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, a plan aimed at establishing the country as a leader in AI implementation.

This strategy according to him focuses on intellectual property rights and prioritises efficiency and transformation across critical sectors, especially through its emphasis on social inclusion and development.

He mentioned that NITDA’s dedication to digital security and safeguarding intellectual property led to the introduction of a national blockchain policy.

This initiative he said supports creative industries by enabling artists, musicians, and filmmakers to tokenise their works, ensuring proof of ownership and curbing copyright violations.

“Technology is a tool—it all depends on how we use it,” Inuwa remarked. “Our objective is to create an environment that allows technology to contribute to Nigeria’s economic and creative development.”

During his speech, Mr. Ibrahim Suleiman, who oversees the Office of the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, characterized the gathering as an opportune moment for all parties involved to outline strategies for advancing Nigeria’s future development.

Government officials, industry specialists, and prominent thinkers joined forces to discuss strategies for addressing obstacles and pinpointing possibilities within the realms of art, culture, and the creative economic sector during the conversations.

The main secondary themes that underpinned the conversation encompassed utilizing technological progress, encouraging creativity, and developing regulations to enhance Nigeria’s international competitiveness.

With ongoing advancements in technology reshaping the creative world, the summit highlighted how digital instruments, artificial intelligence, and blockchain contribute to safeguarding cultural legacy, fostering financial independence, and generating employment opportunities.
