Posted on

SteelSeries has unveiled two new gaming mice: the Rival 3 Gen 2 and the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2. Aimed at gamers seeking high performance without excessive costs, both models promise enhanced speed, improved functionality, and longevity.

### Design and Build Quality

The Rival 3 Gen 2 and Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 feature a similar design characterized by a symmetrical shape and six buttons. Constructed from ABS plastic, both mice are built for durability, while their 100% PTFE feet ensure smooth tracking across surfaces. The Rival 3 Gen 2 is equipped with an 8,500 DPI sensor, whereas the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 boasts a more precise 18,000 DPI sensor developed in collaboration with PixArt, reaching speeds of 400 inches per second (IPS). Both options cater well to general computing tasks as well as gaming, but the wireless model offers additional advantages.

### Connectivity Options

The primary distinction between the two models lies in their connectivity. The Rival 3 Gen 2 operates via a standard USB cable, making it a wired option. In contrast, the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 supports Bluetooth 5.0 and can also connect using a bundled 2.4GHz USB wireless adapter. The 2.4GHz connection minimizes latency, making it ideal for gaming, while Bluetooth is suitable for use with tablets and other devices.

### Enhanced Performance

Both gaming mice showcase a lower click latency of just 1.9 milliseconds, improving response times compared to their predecessors. Additionally, the gliding capability of the mice has been enhanced thanks to the introduction of 100% PTFE feet. SteelSeries has implemented various firmware upgrades to improve overall performance. Notably, the battery life of the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 has seen significant enhancements. According to the company, this model offers between 45 and 200 hours of use when connected via 2.4GHz and can last up to an impressive 450 hours using Bluetooth. This extended battery life allows gamers to indulge in prolonged sessions without frequent battery replacements, powered by a single AAA battery.

### Customization Features

The wired Rival 3 Gen 2 comes with a unique characteristic: dynamic RGB lighting spread across three zones under the mouse. Users can customize the lighting effects through the Prism software and SteelSeries GG. In contrast, the wireless model does not feature this lighting system, likely to preserve battery life for its critical functions.

### Color Variants

Both models are available in classic black and white finishes. However, the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 comes in two additional color options: Aqua and Lavender. While it would have been preferable to see these colors offered for the wired counterpart, users can still tailor the RGB lighting on the wired version to their preferred colors.

### Pricing and Availability

The wired SteelSeries Rival 3 Gen 2 is priced at $40 on Amazon, while the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 is available for $60. Both products can also be purchased from the SteelSeries online store, with expected availability at various retailers soon.

SteelSeries continues to position itself as a formidable player in the gaming peripherals market, ensuring that high-quality features remain accessible to gamers with different preferences and budgets. The Rival 3 series exemplifies their commitment to performance, offering compelling options for those looking to enhance their gaming experience.
