Earlier today, Shopify experienced a significant outage that affected many merchants, preventing them from completing transactions.
As reported on Shopify’s status page, the company has identified the issue and resolved it.
This disruption is especially concerning as customers were looking for deals on Cyber Monday, one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. Shopify is a leading e-commerce platform, used by millions of businesses to create and manage online stores, and it powers over 10% of all e-commerce transactions in the U.S.
The problems began around 6:45 a.m. PT when some merchants reported trouble logging into their Shopify accounts. Many also struggled with their point-of-sale (POS) systems, which stopped them from processing sales.
Shopify’s status page later confirmed that the issue was linked to its login authentication system, which clarified the login problems for POS users. The company indicated that they are starting to see signs of recovery and will continue to monitor the situation closely. They also noted that their Help Center is experiencing longer-than-usual wait times for support due to the outage.
While the exact number of affected merchants isn’t clear, Downdetector, a site that tracks user-reported problems with websites, logged around 4,000 outage incidents.
