Ricoh GR IV Review – The Ultimate Pocket Camera Just Got Even Better

Posted on

When I reviewed the GR III, I mentioned how much I appreciated the snap focus mode. This feature allows you to set a specific focus distance regardless of the aperture. I configured my GR III to use autofocus when I half-pressed the shutter and snap focus when I pressed it quickly, ensuring my shot was captured at my chosen focus distance (usually around 1.5 meters).

That functionality is still there, but now the GR IV has a dedicated setting on the mode dial labeled Sn for Snap Focus mode. This allows you to not only set your desired focus distance but also lock in the aperture. You have control over the depth of field as well. I found this new mode enjoyable and ended up using it quite a bit.

Should You Get One?

The GR IV was released at $1,497, which is quite a jump from the GR III’s launch price of $999. Is it worth the extra cost? If you own a GR III and are unhappy with its autofocus performance, you’ll likely appreciate this upgrade. It’s a significant improvement, and if your budget allows, it’s certainly worth considering.

If you’re thinking about using this pocket camera for video, it’s not the right choice for you. Check out our guides on pocket cameras and the best travel cameras for options that cater to both photo and video capabilities. However, if you’re looking for an APS-C sensor that easily fits in your pocket, offers fantastic one-handed control, and produces outstanding images, the Ricoh GR IV is the right pick for you.

Personally, I’m waiting for the GR IVx, which I hope will be similar to the GR IIIx but with a 40mm-equivalent lens. As of now, Ricoh hasn’t provided any details about the potential release of a GR IVx.
