Choosing the Right Tent for Backpacking: A Review of the Lunar Solo

Selecting an appropriate tent for backpacking can be a complex task. Enthusiasts must balance various factors like pack size, weight, livability, and weather resistance. While some may prioritize weight reduction, opting for durability is often a wiser choice. One such durable option is the Hilleberg Akto, notable for its robust construction. However, during the milder summer months—when storms are infrequent and temperatures remain comfortable—I have discovered the utility of the Lunar Solo, an ultralight tent from Six Moon Design.

Lightweight Performance During Summer Adventures

Over several trips in the warm months through the northern woodlands of Wisconsin and Michigan, the Lunar Solo has established itself as a reliable shelter. This one-person tent weighs merely 2 pounds and compresses into a compact size, aligning well with many outdoor enthusiasts’ gear requirements. Its efficient design meets essential criteria for summer backpacking.

Space and Comfort

When searching for a tent, it’s essential to acknowledge that no single model can meet every need. Therefore, owning multiple tents tailored for specific conditions can be advantageous. I continue to appreciate the strength of the Akto, yet the Lunar Solo excels in warmer weather when prioritizing a lightweight setup.

Despite concerns about its ability to withstand harsh conditions, the Lunar Solo provides adequate protection from rain. Constructed from silicone-coated nylon, often referred to as silnylon, it is notably waterproof. However, users will need to either seal the seams themselves using Seam Grip or opt for the factory seam-sealing service available for an additional $35. My test unit arrived pre-sealed, yet having seam-sealed several tents in the past, I can attest that the process is manageable for those who choose to do it themselves.

Design and Structure

The Lunar Solo features a single-wall and single-pole design intended to be pitched utilizing a trekking pole. This design maximizes portability but may also present challenges in terms of stability and potential condensation. Once erected, the tent provides 26 square feet of living space with a peak height of 49 inches—ample room for one person and their gear. Additionally, an 8.5 square foot vestibule allows for extra storage, keeping essential items securely outside the sleeping area.

The durable 20D silnylon and mesh walls offer reliability at this weight class, unless one opts for high-cost materials like Cuben Fiber/Dyneema. The floor features a sturdier 40-denier design with a bathtub shape that prevents water ingress. For improved ventilation, the rear wall incorporates a 6-inch mesh panel positioned between the floor and the main wall.

Wind Performance Considerations

Despite its lightweight attributes, single-pole tents face inherent challenges with wind resistance. During testing at a windswept campsite along the shores of Lake Superior, the Lunar Solo exhibited some compression, particularly under high winds. It’s important to note that this location was less than ideal for wind resistance evaluation, and I would not normally choose to camp there. The testing indicated a need for either a trekking pole or a heavier support pole than the ultralight option provided by Six Moon Design.

Conclusion

The Lunar Solo by Six Moon Design stands out as an excellent option for summer backpacking trips, where minimizing weight is essential. Its spacious design, combined with durable materials, offers a strong, lightweight alternative for outdoor enthusiasts. While it may struggle against extreme weather conditions, its performance in milder climates makes it a valuable addition to any backpacker’s gear collection. For those who appreciate both durability and minimal weight, the Lunar Solo should certainly be considered for your next adventure.
