…Sign MOU to Advance Key Definitions
As part of its determined effort to revamp and enhance the nation’s energy sector in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two key collaborators: the Chinese firm China Energy Engineering Corporation Ltd and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF). This partnership is being hailed as a significant milestone.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is intended to advance key directions in energy policy set by this administration. This includes amending the Nigerian Constitution and enacting the Nigerian Electricity Act 2023 into law, which will enable state and other subnational governments to oversee their own electricity markets within the sector.
At the event held in Abuja, the nation’s capital, the Director-General of the Nigerian Energy Commission (ECN), Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, stated during his speech that China Energy Corporation has expressed willingness to contribute its extensive resources toward the new energy initiatives outlined under President Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dr. Mustapha observed that from 2023 until now, significant guidance has been established regarding energy policy by this administration. This includes amending the Nigerian Constitution and enacting the Nigerian Electricity Act of 2023, which allows states and other local governmental bodies to oversee their own electricity markets.
This is precisely why, moving forward in the correct direction, the Governors’ Forum stood out as our top choice for collaboration. We extend our gratitude to the Chairperson of the Governors’ Forum for consenting to team up with us in tackling our mutual longstanding issue regarding electricity supply by endorsing this agreement.
As stated by the DG ECN, “This Memorandum of Understanding encompasses several key areas: establishing a sustainable green energy framework for the future, assisting Nigerian states in formulating energy plans aligned with the officially endorsed National Energy Masterplan, and enhancing the use of renewable resources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power—particularly within off-grid communities.”
To cement our commitment to sustainability, we will be launching the Nigeria-China Renewable Energy Research Center,” said Dr. Mustapha. “This center aims to assist Nigeria through advanced technological research, thereby enhancing human capabilities and addressing energy challenges within the country.
At the event, the ECN Director General elaborated, “In the near future, we anticipate significant investment in initiatives stemming from this partnership; these efforts are projected to generate numerous sustainable job opportunities throughout Nigeria’s various states. This development aims primarily to boost energy security.”
“As the relationship progresses, Nigeria’s contribution towards carbon neutrality will continue to come to the fore and there will be direct impact on our environment, making life better and the mother earth a better place to live.” He said.
In his conclusion, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi thanked all partners who contributed towards making this day a reality and further emphasize the Commission’s continued determination to carry out its mandate in overall support of this administration vision to renew the hope of Nigerians.
The event was attended by Alhaji Abdullateef Shitu, the Director-General of the Governor’s Forum representing the Chairperson of the Governors Forum, along with a representative from the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology for the Chinese government/embassy. Also present were the Chairman of China Energy and his entourage.
