To begin its path towards complete digitization and improve the prominence of its initiatives for generating employment and developing skills, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has started training more than 100 employees in information technology.
The head of the organization, Silas Agara, disclosed this information when addressing reporters at the opening ceremony of an ICT training program for more than 100 employees of NDE who were gathered from various regions across the country on Wednesday in Abuja.
He observed that for the agency’s processes to be smoothly automated, it would be essential to provide employees with training in information communication technology (ICT) skills like content development.
In his words, “We are trying to transition from analog to XT-Tabs. We have not done very well in the ICT operations or transiting from the analog to the digital. I keep saying that it’s not your fault and we can’t hold you responsible because you have not been given the right tools to perform this.

You haven’t been adequately prepared for this task, and without proper preparation, great outcomes are unlikely. This is why we put in our best effort to build the Renewed Hope Job Initiative online; it was the first initiative of its type.
“We tried, and with your support, we were able to come out of it successfully, and that gave us the insight that we must go back to the basics and equip you with the right tools so we can get the desired result from you.
Nigerians expect the NDE to revive the spirit of NDE as seen in earlier times. Insights gained from the Renewed Hope Job Initiative underscore the critical importance of enhancing the IT competencies of personnel across the country. Currently, the NDE stands ready to digitize and automate all its processes.
Agara further stated that digitalizing their processes would enable the organization to effectively fulfill President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative by providing unemployed individuals in Nigeria with skills tailored towards employment opportunities.
We have undertaken numerous activities, yet we haven’t fully claimed our place. Despite organizing many programs, there is absolutely no justification for us not seizing this opportunity and presenting the renewal document so that NDE can effectively back Mr. President’s new hope initiative.
In Mr. President’s comprehensive pledges and the revitalization initiative, upon examining certain undertakings and measures implemented, one can see their impact on the functioning and authority of NDE.
Numbers three, four, and five are regions that fulfill the requirements set forth by NDE. This implies that with proper alignment, we have an opportunity to support Mr. President’s initiative aimed at advancing the NDE agenda. Now is the moment for us to strategically position ourselves and claim our appropriate stance.
Even as they acknowledged the necessity for an upgraded system, the head of NDE mentioned that with increased adoption of IT processes at their organization, “We’ve internally decided that at least 60% of our resources should focus on developing digital competencies.” This highlights the importance of enhancing our infrastructure so it can handle future demand effectively. The influx of job seekers has become quite concerning; currently, millions of unemployed individuals in Nigeria are seeking employment opportunities.
If you look at the statistics of NYSC graduates coming out of the system, they are quite concerning. This suggests that without proper action, it could become a ticking time bomb. Therefore, organizations like NDE and others responsible for skill development programs must step up their efforts. They need to pull together to support Mr. President in fulfilling the goals of the Renews Hope initiative.
Mr. Edmund Onwuliri, who serves as the Director of Research and Planning at the NDE, pointed out that through this training, employees of the organization will acquire essential digital competencies, enhancing their ability to perform their duties effectively.
Praising the DG’s observation, he remarked, “For the very first time in the NDE’s history, an event like this is unfolding. History will undoubtedly treat you favorably without any prompting, due to how profoundly you’ve altered the course of the NDE’s operations since joining us. Today marks another historical moment as these numerous individuals from the NDE receive crucial skills necessary for enhancing their job performance.”
Within our capabilities, we will provide you with all the support and loyalty needed for your vision of an enhanced and improved NDE to become overwhelmingly successful.
On behalf of all participants, Dr. Mabel Onyedineyu stated that the staff members expressed enthusiasm about acquiring new abilities and affirmed their dedication to improving their professional capabilities.
“This is an excellent training session that you’ve organized for us, and we truly value your hard work. I can confidently say that we are all highly excited about the entire training process. We are dedicated to this learning journey and firmly believe that once the training concludes, the outcomes will be evident as we kick off the second phase of the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative,” she stated.
