Currently, Morocco has approximately 284 military aircraft in operation, and this figure is anticipated to increase to around 320 within the next few years, as stated in the 2025 World Air Forces Guide.
As part of a strategic initiative to update the Royal Moroccan Air Force, this enhancement aims to substitute old aircraft and strengthen its operational capacities amid rising tensions across the region.
The core of this change lies with Morocco’s F-16 aircraft fleet. This nation currently operates 15 F-16C Viper multirole fighter jets and expects an additional 24 units soon.
These streamlined, cutting-edge aircraft are renowned for their maneuverability, sophisticated target-tracking technology, and robust performance in battle, which makes them widely favored internationally.
However, the nation isn’t solely focused on the future; it is also maximizing the use of its older aircraft. The Moroccan Air Force continues to operate 46 Mirage F1s and 22 F-5E fighter jets, some of which have been around for decades.
Even with their advanced age, these aircraft continue to be operational due to Morocco’s robust maintenance and upgrade initiatives.
These planes are still used in interception and escort missions, and even in advanced training roles.
When it comes to helicopters, the air force owns 24 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, with 12 more on the way. These are some of the world’s most powerful and versatile helicopters, built to handle combat in all conditions.
The helicopter fleet encompasses an array of models designed for transportation and support duties, including Bell 205s, 212s, and 206s, along with CH-47Ds and both SA 330 and SA 342 variants.
The transportation fleet also boasts great diversity. It comprises C-27J Spartan aircraft, C-130 Hercules models (there are 14 altogether), CN-235s, along with lighter craft such as the King Air 200, 300, and 350 series airplanes.
These planes are essential for swiftly transporting soldiers and equipment over difficult landscapes and become crucial during crises and natural calamities.
The naval forces of Morocco include an air division equipped with King Air 350 aircraft and Eurocopter AS565 as well as Bell 412 helicopters. These assets are primarily utilized for coastal surveillance, preventing smuggling activities, and safeguarding borders, particularly around Morocco’s extensive 3,500-kilometer shoreline.
