The Lagos State Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology announced on Friday that more than one million new internet subscriptions were registered within the past year as part of their metro fiber initiative.

Olatunbosun Alake, the State Commissioner responsible for Innovation, Science, and Technology, disclosed this information at the 2025 Ministerial Press Conference held on Friday. This event was organized to commemorate the second year since Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commenced his current term in office.

Alake mentioned that the number of internet subscribers in Lagos grew to around one million from 2024 to 2025, attributed to the state government’s initiatives in fiber deployment and improved connectivity.

The commissioner stated that the metro fibre initiative aims to install 6,000 kilometers of optical fiber conduits to boost digital access. They also mentioned that constructing a digitally advanced city necessitates these physical infrastructural links to enhance the overall digital connectivity within the state.

Alake stated that the ministry has successfully created a round-the-clock thriving economy within a protected and secured setting, which consequently boosted the state’s GDP. She highlighted that they have managed to maintain safety in Lagos City, leading to an upsurge in digital traffic monitoring activities.

The administration is developing a fully digitalized 24/7 urban center designed to enable corporations to function within a protected and secure space. This initiative aims to foster a safer business atmosphere, stimulate job creation, and boost the state’s gross domestic product.

“This project entails deploying smart video cameras at key locations throughout the state, with implementation and finalization occurring across multiple stages—phase I, II, and III, respectively,” he stated.

Moreover, the commissioner mentioned that the state’s data framework has been digitalized to provide a more effective public administration. He further noted that this digital transformation also enables fruitful collaborations with private sector entities, fostering governmental solutions via sandboxes (technological environments used for testing).

As he mentioned, over the past year, the ministry has successfully digitalized various operations within the state. This includes transforming the state’s data framework, overseeing Oracle payments for certain state government workers, integrating AI-driven chatbots to enhance service provision, and ultimately aiding the administration in delivering superior services to citizens.

According to the commissioner, the state is driving broadband to ensure public connectivity, saying that the Lagos Identity Card Project had continued to operate an open framework that allowed multiple parties to participate in the operations and benefits of the exercise, as a means to create more value for the government and businesses within the state.
