MENLO PARK, Calif., April 30 — In an effort to stand out among the many players in the artificial intelligence market, Meta Platforms has introduced a new independent AI application featuring social media elements to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The Meta AI application, developed using the firm’s Llama 4 AI platform, features a “discovery” feed allowing users to explore how others engage with artificial intelligence. Additionally, it offers a vocal interaction option for communicating with the AI.

“Meta is wise to distinguish its rival to ChatGPT by leveraging the company’s background in social media. The application’s Discover feed resembles an early version of the original Facebook News Feed, but it concentrates solely on AI applications,” explained Mike Proulx, a research director at Forrester.

By allowing users to connect their Facebook and Instagram accounts, the Meta AI application gains an advantage in immediately customizing its user experience using social media context.

Unlike many competitors, Meta has opted to release its AI technology for free under an open-source model. According to the firm, over a billion individuals utilize their AI offerings monthly.

During the first conference, LlamaCon, held at Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California on Tuesday, the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg engaged in a technical conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about the rapid pace of AI advancement and how this technology is transforming not only their respective firms – which have seen AI generate code autonomously – but also society as a whole.

The EU imposes a fine of 500 million euros on Apple and 200 million euros on Meta in these digital-related cases.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the significant “buzz” surrounding AI and stated, “If these advancements result in substantial boosts in productivity, we should see corresponding growths in GDP.”

“This is going take some multiple years, many years, to play out,” Zuckerberg said. “I’m curious how you think, what’s your current outlook on what we should be looking for to understand the progress that this is making?”

Nadella brought up the advent of electricity, saying that “AI has the promise, but you now have to sort of really have it deliver the real change in productivity – and that requires software and also management change, right? Because in some sense, people have to work with it differently.”

He mentioned that it took 50 years for individuals to realize they needed to alter factory operations using electricity.

Zuckerberg replied “well we’re all investing as if it’s not going to take 50 years, so I hope it doesn’t take 50 years.”
