Meta Unveils New Smart Glasses Featuring Advanced Interaction Capabilities

Meta has launched an innovative pair of smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Display, aimed at enhancing user interaction through visual elements. The glasses, available in black and sand colors starting September 30 for $799, mark a significant leap in the integration of augmented reality and conversational AI technology.

Enhanced User Interaction

While users can still interact with Meta AI via voice commands, the introduction of visual features aims to enrich the overall user experience. One of the standout capabilities is live speech captioning and language translation; now, users can see these translations and captions directly on the glasses instead of their smartphones. This functionality extends to other commands such as “Hey Meta, what am I looking at?” allowing users to receive detailed visual information regarding their surroundings.

For navigation, the glasses provide turn-by-turn directions projected onto the real world, simplifying the process of exploring local attractions. Furthermore, for scenarios where vocal interaction is impractical, Meta showcased a handwriting recognition feature. Users can draw letters with their fingers on a flat surface, which the Neural Band will interpret as text. Although this feature was demonstrated, it will not be available at the product’s launch but is expected to be rolled out in the near future.

Acknowledging Limitations and Future Enhancements

Meta has recognized that some features will be limited at launch. For instance, the integrated Spotify service will only display currently playing tracks and basic controls, while Instagram functionalities will initially be confined to Reels and direct messages. The company has noted plans to expand these capabilities in the upcoming months.

Comparing the current Ray-Ban Display to last year’s Orion prototype, which relied on an external puck for advanced processing, the new model omits this necessity, resulting in a sleeker frame design. Meta aims to offer a comprehensive range of wearable technologies in the future, including smart glasses, display variants, and fully integrated AR glasses.

Availability and Purchase Instructions

The Ray-Ban Displays will be available for in-store purchase only in the United States, with initial stock expected to be limited. Potential buyers are encouraged to visit retail locations to ensure a proper wristband fit, essential for optimal functionality. Store associates will provide guidance on the hand gestures required to control the glasses, and a tutorial will be accessible upon first use.

Oakley Meta Vanguard: Sports-Focused Innovation

In addition to the Ray-Ban Display, Meta has introduced the Oakley Meta Vanguard, designed specifically for sports enthusiasts. Featuring a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera with a 122-degree field of view, these glasses are engineered for capturing action-packed moments in stunning detail. The camera is perfectly positioned on the bridge of the nose, making it ideal for POV recordings, including high-resolution slow-motion and hyperlapse footage.

The Vanguard is built to withstand rigorous outdoor activities, boasting an IP67 waterproof rating—Meta’s highest for any eyewear. Enhanced sound capabilities, including louder speakers and a five-microphone array, ensure crystal-clear communication and command recognition, even in windy conditions.

As Meta continues to innovate, both the Ray-Ban Display and Oakley Meta Vanguard are poised to redefine the future of wearable technology, merging style and functionality for various user needs.
