Meta Implements New Disclaimer to Tackle Over-sharing Issues on AI App
In a recent effort to combat the growing trend of over-sharing among users of its AI application, Meta has introduced a warning notice encouraging users to refrain from disclosing personal or sensitive information. This change, first reported by Business Insider, reflects the company’s response to criticism over the nature of interactions being shared publicly within the app’s built-in "discover" feed.
Background on User Concerns
The Meta AI app, which debuted in April, has been described by Business Insider as "one of the most depressing places online" due to the prevalence of users sharing personal and sometimes embarrassing details. Although the app does not automatically broadcast users’ chat histories, many users inadvertently made their interactions public by choosing to share them without fully grasping the implications of their actions.
Numerous posts have surfaced, with users seeking advice on sensitive topics, including health recommendations and legal inquiries. Some individuals even added disclaimers like "keep this private" to their public posts as a means to attempt to retract their shared content.
Expert Criticism and User Experience
Privacy advocates have criticized Meta’s design choices, highlighting that most other prevalent AI chatbots do not feature a publicly accessible feed. Rachel Tobac, a well-known security expert, commented on the discrepancy between user expectations and the app’s functionality. "When users assume the tool operates in a certain way that differs from reality, it creates significant user experience and security challenges," she stated.
The Mozilla Foundation also echoed calls for a redesign of the app, emphasizing a lack of clarity regarding the public sharing of information. They pointed out that the absence of recognizable sharing cues, common in other Meta applications, could mislead users.
New Warning Measures
In response to the rising concerns, Meta has now added a disclaimer that appears upon attempting to share an interaction publicly. This notification advises users, "Your prompts are public and visible to everyone. Your prompts may be suggested by Meta on other Meta apps. Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information." Notably, this warning only appears for the first share to remind users of their privacy settings.
Furthermore, it appears that the public feed may no longer showcase text exchanges shared by users, focusing instead on AI-generated images and videos. This shift could either be a permanent modification or a temporary reaction to the scrutiny the app has faced.
Managing App Privacy Settings
For users who wish to adjust their privacy settings and prevent any unintended public sharing, the app allows for easy modifications. By navigating to their profile in the upper right corner, users can go to Data & Privacy > Manage Your Information > Make all public prompts visible only to you and apply this setting universally.
