The Lagos State Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has announced that more than one million new internet subscriptions have been added in the state as part of its metro fiber initiative.

The state Commissioner For Innovation, Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, disclosed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing on Friday to mark the second year anniversary of the second tenure of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat administration.
He observed that because of the state government’s “work on fiber optic deployment and improved connectivity, the number of internet subscribers in Lagos grew to around one million from 2024 to 2025.”
Alake said the metroFibre project sought to deliver 6,000 kilo meters of optic fibre ducts for increased in digital penetration, adding that building a digitized city will require physical infrastructure connections to improve the digital connectivity of the state.
He observed that the ministry is fostering a round-the-clock thriving economy within a protected and secure setting, consequently boosting the state’s GDP.
The commissioner stated that the ministry succeeded in making Lagos City safer, noting an uptick in digital traffic monitoring.
Alake stated that “the government is developing a digital 24/7 city designed to provide companies with a secure operating environment, fostering a safer setting for business activities, generating new job opportunities, and boosting the state’s GDP.”
The commissioner highlighted that this initiative entails installing smart video cameras at key sites across the state. The implementation and finalization will be carried out progressively through three distinct stages: Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III.
In addition to various accomplishments, the commissioner mentioned that the state’s data framework has been digitalized, leading to improved efficiency in public services.
He mentioned that the digital transformation also enables fruitful collaborations with private sector entities to develop governmental solutions using sandboxes (which are technical testing environments).
Alake also said the ministry had been promoting e-governance, safe city increase in digital traffic enforcement, improving cyber security through collaboration with private sector, driving data protection compliance project, technology development, as well as science research and innovation initiatives through its agencies.
He mentioned that over the past year, the Ministry has successfully digitized various operations within the state. This includes modernizing the state’s data framework, handling Oracle payments for certain state government workers, integrating AI-driven chatbots to enhance service provision, and ultimately aiding the administration in delivering improved services to citizens.
Alake mentioned that the state is pushing forward with broadband initiatives to guarantee public access, alongside ensuring the Lagos Identity Card project maintains an inclusive structure permitting various stakeholders to engage in both the processes and advantages of this undertaking. This approach aims at generating greater value for governmental bodies and enterprises operating within the region.
