The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his government’s dedication to enhancing cooperative ties with the Kingdom of Sweden, particularly focusing on advancements in information technology, cybersecurity, and infrastructure projects aimed at improving life for inhabitants of Lagos.
On Tuesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy Dr ObafemI Hamzat, provided this guarantee when he received Crown Princess of Sweden and Duchess of Västergötland, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice Desiree, along with her entourage, at the Lagos House in Marina.
He observed that Lagos, being the heart of commerce in Nigeria and a key figure in Africa, welcomes enhanced cooperation with Sweden. This is particularly true as Swedish entities interact with the local business sector in search of jointly advantageous growth prospects.
The governor highlighted the continuous technological advancements in the state by revealing that Lagos was constructing 6,800 kilometers of fiber-optic network to enhance internet capacity. He mentioned that the initial stage of this initiative, which spans 3,500 kilometers, has been finished and is now attracting international technology companies’ interest.
We require extensive technological infrastructure. Our plan involves laying approximately 6,800 kilometers of fiber optic cables throughout our state. The initial stage, covering around 3,500 kilometers, has been completed with the aim of boosting broadband access,” he said. “Notably, many businesses are showing interest; for instance, Google is constructing a data center, along with roughly four more facilities currently being developed.
He mentioned that Lagos, which has more than 22 million people—almost twice as many as Sweden—presents significant potential for growth in the digital sector and improvements in infrastructure.
Crown Princess Alice Désirée responded with enthusiasm about the upcoming visit and recognized Lagos as the financial heart of Nigeria. She praised its thriving commercial landscape and highlighted its promise for strengthening ties between Sweden and Nigeria.
We are extremely enthusiastic about our presence here and eager to explore the possibilities for the evolving partnership between Sweden and Nigeria. There are significant opportunities for expansion and collaboration ahead,” she stated. “It brings us great joy to be here alongside the Swedish businesses that are already established in Nigeria.
During his remarks, Sweden’s Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Mr. Andreas Carlson, highlighted that the purpose of their visit was to strengthen relationships focused on fostering a sustainable economy, advancing digital innovations, and enhancing cross-border cooperation. He also mentioned that the inauguration of Sweden’s inaugural trade office in Nigeria would take place in Lagos later that same day.
Princess Victoria, Her Royal Highness and Crown Princess, has arrived in Lagos to emphasize the significance of maintaining a robust relationship and collaboration between Nigeria and Lagos State,” he stated. “There are prospects for progress regarding environmental sustainability and digital transformation. This location presents an ideal starting point.
The visit included a cultural exhibition by the Lagos State Cultural Troupe, where the Crown Princess participated in traditional dancing, much to the pleasure of those present.
Accompanied by Ambassador Tiwatope Elias-Fatile from Nigeria to Sweden and various other notable figures, Princess Alice Désirée made her appearance. Upon their arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, they were welcomed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Bolaji Dada; along with several additional officials.
At the event held at Lagos House, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, along with Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, who is the spouse of the Deputy Governor, bestowed traditional African presents upon the Crown Princess as a gesture to commemorate her visit.
