New Delhi [India], April 11 (ANI): In the midst of
tariffs
introduced by the Donald Trump administration affecting various nations worldwide such as India, External Affairs Minister Sصند
Jaishankar
On Friday, they stated that the United States has substantially altered its strategy for interacting globally, leading India to explore closer ties with Western nations known for their open-market economies as more compatible allies.
Speaking at the Carnegie Global Tech Summit 2025 in the nation’s capital
Jaishankar
indicated that the United States has implemented
tariffs
Has India emphasized the necessity of addressing the “specific imbalanced nature of our openness to the global economy”?
I contend that we now have an opportunity to leverage the present circumstances by concentrating on the three major ongoing negotiations with the U.S.
EU
and with the UK, I would say if these really work out for us in this year we would be in a very different position”

On April 9, US President Donald Trump implemented a 90-day suspension of reciprocal actions.
tariffs
applied to nations worldwide, such as the 26 percent
tariffs
In India, except for China where he levied a total duty of 145 percent.
To a question from the audience on whether the US could be trusted to put substance into trust in various fields in the context of the recent disruptions caused by its
tariffs
,
Jaishankar
mentioned that he believes it applies even when the other T is involved.
“In just one month after the change in leadership, we’ve essentially reached a conceptual understanding that we’ll establish a bilateral trade deal. We also agree to discover a solution that benefits both parties since each side has its own worries,” stated the External Affairs Minister.
He pointed out that the talks for the bilateral trade deal do not constitute an endless process.
Jaishankar
mentioned that India is ready to move swiftly towards concluding a trade agreement with the United States, noting that this country has significantly altered how it interacts globally, thereby impacting all areas.
Jaishankar
mentioned that the worldwide scenario has significantly changed compared to what it was twelve months prior.
Noting that India was unable to conclude a trade deal with the US during Trump’s first term,
Jaishankar
This time, we are exceptionally prepared with a heightened sense of urgency. We recognize an opportunity, and we aim to capitalize on this chance. Our trading teams are fully motivated.
Jaishankar
Added that similar to how the US views India, India also holds a perspective on the US. “During the first Trump administration, we engaged in discussions over four years. They have their stance towards us, and honestly, we have ours as well. In essence, they failed to grasp this. Therefore, when examining the situation,
EU
“Often, people claim we’ve been negotiating for 30 years, but this isn’t completely accurate since there were long periods when no one was communicating with each other at all. However, these negotiations have indeed been quite drawn out.” He stated.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with U.S. President Donald Trump in February 2025, India and the United States declared their intention to engage in discussions aimed at establishing a bilateral trade agreement. A joint announcement established an objective for both parties to develop a feasible framework by September of the same year. Recently, a delegation from America traveled to New Delhi to finalize the conditions under which these trade negotiations would proceed.
Responding to a question at the Carnegie India Global Technology Summit,
Jaishankar
mentioned that the Indian negotiators “are individuals who excel in their field and have high ambitions for what they aim to accomplish.”
“We are trying to get the other side to kind of speed it up,”
Jaishankar
he pointed out that previously, several countries would claim India was hindering the progress of the negotiations.
Previously, it was believed that we were the ones holding things back, but nowadays, the situation has flipped.
The External Affairs Minister stated that “so far, the US has responded promptly to what has been presented, but we shall now have to observe how this develops.”
The implications are significant not only due to the United States being the world’s largest economy and a primary catalyst for technological progress globally, but also because technology clearly plays an essential part in rejuvenating America’s prominence. Thus, there is a link between ‘Make America Great Again’ and technology that may have been less apparent from 2016 to 2020.
India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with her UK counterpart, Rachel Reeves, in London on Thursday to discuss the trade deal between their two countries. They both agreed to expedite efforts toward finalizing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).
Regarding the European Union, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated today that the government aims to hasten the completion of a free trade deal with the EU. Addressing the Italy-India Business, Science and Technology Forum, he noted that India has become a significant marketplace for member countries within the European Union. Additionally, he mentioned that India offers potential for expanding large-scale manufacturing for international markets.
While addressing the Carnegie Global Summit today, the External Affairs Minister stated, “If we look towards Europe, once more, there’s been a significant shift over the past year. About five years back, Europe was likely in the most favorable geopolitical position. They had established an optimal balance among the United States, Russia, and China. However, now each corner of this triangular relationship faces considerable strain. There might be a valuable lesson in this complexity; from what seemed like paradise, things could easily transform into chaos. Nonetheless, it must be highlighted that technology plays a crucial role both in Europe’s current challenges and how we interact with them. Just about a month ago, we hosted 21 European Commissioners. If you consider the depth of engagement today between India and
EU
relations, there is, I think, clearly sort of factoring in both of their predicament as well as of the way India looks at possibilities which have opened up after that.”
Jaishankar
also touched upon the advances of China in the evolving global geo-tech landscape.
He pointed out that trade and technological factors shape the dynamics between the United States and China, emphasizing that China’s choices hold similar weight to those made by the U.S.
There have been significant changes in the United States, a topic with which all of you are equally, if not better acquainted than myself. I believe this represents a major transition over the past year. However, another notable transformation has occurred, which could be described as an ongoing evolution. This development might seem gradual rather than sudden, much like an unfolding process. That change pertains to the progress of China.
Many aspects of what we’ve witnessed in the world of trade can also be seen as part of the technology narrative. It has included several significant events. One such instance was DeepSeek. However, I believe that the transformations driven by China hold similar importance to the alterations in America’s stance. Moreover, these two developments have mutually impacted each other.
