Meta shared some exciting news on Thursday: Instagram Threads is set to start testing video ads! This addition aims to make Threads more competitive with platforms like X, and it marks a new chapter in the platform’s advertising efforts, which kicked off last month when ads became available to global advertisers.
The announcement came during Meta’s presentation at the IAB NewFronts, an event where various social media companies showcase their offerings to potential advertisers.
According to Meta, a “small number” of advertisers will have the opportunity to test video ads in either a 19:9 or 1:1 format. These ads will pop up between regular content in the Threads feed, but unfortunately, Meta hasn’t shared much about the pricing or how often these ads will be displayed.

In other news, Threads has now attracted over 350 million active users each month! Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, highlighted a 35% increase in user engagement thanks to recent improvements in the app’s recommendation systems during Meta’s earnings call in April.
These updates about Threads were among several announcements regarding Meta’s ad products at the NewFronts.
Additionally, the company is experimenting with a new feature called Reels trending ads, which will be shown alongside the most popular Reels from creators.
Meanwhile, TikTok recently launched its own expansion of a similar offering, Pulse Suite, allowing advertisers to position their content next to trending topics across various categories, holidays, and major cultural events, just like sports and lifestyle content.
