Google Introduces AI Mode for Conversational Search
Enhanced Voice Interaction Features for Users
Google has unveiled an innovative feature called "AI Mode," within its experimental Search functionality, allowing users to engage in dynamic voice conversations. This new tool empowers individuals to pose complex, multi-part queries effortlessly and receive meaningful, AI-generated responses.
How to Access the New AI Mode
To utilize this feature, users simply need to open the Google app and click on the newly added “Live” icon to initiate a voice query. After speaking their question, they will receive an audio response generated by AI, enabling a seamless back-and-forth interaction.
Competing with Popular AI Search Services
This launch comes shortly after Google made AI Mode widely available across the United States. The introduction of this feature is viewed as a strategic response to existing AI-driven services such as Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, particularly in terms of voice functionalities. By enhancing its voice interaction capabilities, Google seeks to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving AI search market.
Practical Uses of AI Mode
Google emphasizes the utility of this feature for users who are multitasking or on the move. For instance, if someone is preparing for a vacation, they might inquire, “What are some tips for preventing a linen dress from wrinkling in a suitcase?” They can then follow up with questions like, “What should I do if it still wrinkles?”
During the conversation, relevant links will appear on the screen, allowing users to delve deeper into their search topics without interrupting their flow.
Additional Features and Functionality
Search Live operates efficiently in the background, enabling users to continue conversations while using other applications. Furthermore, there is an option to tap a “transcript” button to view the text output of the AI’s responses, allowing for additional inquiries via typing. Users can also revisit past conversations through their AI Mode history.
Liza Ma, the Director of Product Management at Google Search, highlighted in a blog post that Search Live is powered by a specialized version of Gemini, equipped with advanced voice capabilities. She stated, “Our custom model is built on Search’s best-in-class quality and information systems, ensuring reliable and informative responses regardless of how users ask their questions. The voice feature employs our query fan-out technique to display a broader range of helpful content from the web, promoting new exploration opportunities.”
Future Developments in AI Mode
Looking ahead, Google plans to expand the Live capabilities of AI Mode. Upcoming features will include the ability to ask questions based on real-time visuals captured by a user’s smartphone camera—an element that was initially showcased at Google I/O in May.
As Google continues to enhance its AI capabilities, users can anticipate more interactive and versatile search experiences designed to facilitate information gathering in today’s fast-paced digital environment.
