Google Takes On Defamation Battle That Made Meta Back Down

Posted on

Google has filed a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit from anti-corporate diversity activist Robby Starbuck. Starbuck alleges that Google’s AI mistakenly linked him to sexual assault claims and a white nationalist. He is seeking $15 million in damages. In its response, Google argues that Starbuck’s case is based on his “misuse of developer tools to induce hallucinations.” Google points out that Starbuck hasn’t specified the prompts he used to create the outputs in question, nor has he identified any actual individuals who were misled by these claims. Starbuck did not immediately provide a comment. While Google might ultimately consider a similar approach as Meta to resolve the lawsuit, for now, the company is opting to contest it in court.
