Fujifilm Introduces the X Half: A New Vintage-Style Camera
Fujifilm is set to launch a compact addition to its renowned X-series of digital cameras, known as the X Half, in late June. This innovative model features an 18-megapixel “half-frame” sensor boasting a portrait-oriented design and a fixed 32mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens.
Embracing the Vintage Aesthetic
Despite being a digital camera, the X Half is created with a nostalgic film-like experience in mind. Priced at $849.99, it resembles the analog lifestyle by incorporating a secondary screen dedicated to selecting from 13 distinct film simulations. Notably, the X Half does not support RAW photo formats, opting instead for JPGs to provide a straightforward shooting experience.
Examining the Half-Frame Concept
Fujifilm’s interpretation of the half-frame format diverges from traditional definitions, which typically capture images measuring 18mm x 24mm. Instead, the X Half employs a 1-inch sensor with dimensions of 8.8mm x 13.3mm, approximately half the size of the APS-C sensors found in other Fujifilm models, such as the X100VI and X-T5. Despite this technical distinction, the camera echoes the spirit of classic half-frame cameras, focusing on capturing spontaneous moments.
Compact and Portable Design
Weighing only 8.5 ounces (240 grams), the X Half is designed for portability, easily fitting into a variety of bags or even oversized pockets. Its compact size is comparable to that of traditional disposable cameras, but it boasts a sophisticated glass lens with autofocusing capabilities and aspherical lens corrections. Additionally, the X Half can record basic video at a resolution of 1080 x 1440. Justin Stailey from Fujifilm North America characterized the lens as having "some character," which suggests it may not offer the utmost sharpness.
Enhanced Features Through a Dedicated App
Photographers can utilize the X Half’s classic optical viewfinder or its 2.4-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen to capture images. Furthermore, a dedicated smartphone application will be available shortly after the camera’s launch, bringing extra functionality to users. This app allows for the creation of diptychs, resembling traditional half-frame photography, where users can select two adjacent images, two videos, or a combination of both.
Digital Film Experience
The app also incorporates nostalgic features, such as a Film Camera Mode that organizes the next 36, 54, or 72 images into a contact sheet. Each digital film strip will be labeled with the chosen film simulation, enhancing the vintage feel. An included faux film advance lever encourages users to interact with the camera between shots in Film Camera Mode.
Photography enthusiasts can further stylize their images with creative filters, including light leak effects, an expired film look, and a retro timestamp reminiscent of the 1990s. However, as the camera only shoots in JPG format, any applied filters and simulations will be permanently embedded in the images, unlike traditional post-processing options available with RAW files.
