The agritech firm Afrimash has introduced a USSD service allowing farmers to authenticate the genuineness of day-old chicks prior to buying them, utilizing only a standard mobile device.
On Monday, a statement revealed that the newly launched service has received backing from the international non-profit organization ‘Acumen.’ This initiative aims to help numerous poultry farmers, particularly those located in remote regions, detect contaminated and substandard goods.
This platform enables farmers to verify that their chicks come from approved hatcheries, which could prevent significant economic damage due to fraudulent or unhealthy poultry.
The Afrimash CEO, Ayoade Oyedotun, referred to the launch as a significant milestone for the agriculture industry. ”
Chicken farmers have suffered significant losses because of fake and inferior chicks. The USSD platform provides them with control, assurance, and access to high-quality products—all right at their fingertips on their mobile devices,” he stated.
Apart from verification, the platform enables customers to make orders for premium chicks, monitor their buys, contrast pricing, and obtain vaccination manuals. Each purchase placed via this system comes with complimentary delivery to any of Afrimash’s 80 collection points spread throughout Nigeria; notably, 35 of these locations are operated by the company itself.
Afrimash is boosting awareness via their recently introduced Farmer Ambassador Program, motivating people and agriculture enthusiasts to promote the USSD platform among others.
Oyedotun states that this innovation is integral to Afrimash’s larger objective of digitalizing access to farming supplies and equipping farmers with instruments that boost their output. Additionally, the firm employs mobile platforms for delivering agronomy advice and hosts weekly online seminars focused on chicken husbandry and industry standards.
