As part of an initiative to bolster border protection and update travel procedures, the Federal Government has unveiled plans for automated entry and departure forms within their enhanced e-Visa framework. This advanced system will be implemented starting from May 1, 2025, with the dual goals of streamlining passenger flow and improving overall safety measures.
The initiative was introduced at a shared press conference conducted in Abuja on Wednesday by the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, alongside the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The ministers highlighted that this initiative represents a joint undertaking with significant participation from major organizations such as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). These entities will be essential in implementing the e-Visa system along with the introduction of advanced digital travel documents.
What we are accomplishing today serves as additional proof of this administration’s commitment to encourage coordination among crucial ministries whose responsibilities intersect,” Keyamo said. “This instance highlights such collaboration, which is centered around the launch of the electronic visa system.
Speaking on the importance of the new initiative, Minister Tunji-Ojo highlighted its significance to Nigeria’s security framework.
“This program significantly impacts our country’s security framework. Up until recently, we relied solely on traditional methods where travelers would complete paper forms for their departure and arrival processes. However, the implementation of the e-Visa system along with automated exit and entry records marks a significant shift,” he explained.
He mentioned that the procedure will now take place digitally prior to boarding, requiring travelers to complete their landing and exit forms online and show these documents to airline staff before being permitted to get on the plane.
“Nigeria boasts a population of 230 million exceptional individuals, and our focus should be on advancing technologically. With this in mind, we’re implementing automation for the visa application process. It’s worth noting that the NCAA will oversee coordination and establish guidelines for airlines,” Tunji-Ojo further explained.
This demonstrates our dedication to safeguarding our nation, securing our borders, and ensuring that our national sovereignty is upheld.
The interior minister further noted that the e-Visa system is designed not only to strengthen border controls but also to simplify entry processes for visitors.
“The e-Visa will simplify entry into Nigeria for individuals while also boosting our nation’s security,” he stated.
