Egbin Power, which stands as one of Nigeria’s foremost power generation companies, has taken a notable step toward boosting the country’s digital economy. It has been recognized as the perfect site for establishing Nigeria’s inaugural National Data Park and Computational Infrastructure.

During his tour at the power plant, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who serves as the Hon Minister for Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, shared this news with attendees. He was welcomed by Dr. Kola Adesina (MFR), the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, along with Mokhtar Bounour, CEO of Egbin Power, and several others present.

The innovative program, led by the Federal Government, seeks to leverage the strength of consistent energy sources and advanced technologies to propel Nigeria’s digital economy ahead.

The collaboration between Egbin Power and the FG under­scores a shared vision to enhance the nation’s technological capabil­ities and foster innovation in the digital sector.

Dr. Tijani received an overview of the plant and subsequently toured the facility alongside the management team.

During the discussion, the Minister expressed confidence that Egbin Power has the right en­vironment to host the Data Park, enabling the GenCo to play a cru­cial role in powering the digital economy.

“Realizing the growth we aspire to hinges on having a robust digital economy. All necessary components to drive this digital transformation are present at Egbin Power—including not just energy and water resources, but also the exceptional expertise of our workforce. This combination is essential for propelling the digital economy forward,” he stated.

The Minister emphasized the worldwide progress in artificial intelligence and underscored the necessity for Africa to keep pace with this trend. He underlined the importance of discovering creative methods to engage in this digital revolution.

He also pointed out that Nigeria’s digital economy plays a substantial role in contributing to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He emphasized that having an effective data center is crucial for leveraging the potential of AI and data processing.

Dr. Adesina, when discussing the strategic partnership, stated: “The connection between the digital economy and energy supply is significant. Consistent access to power improves the effectiveness of the digital sector, including areas like IoT, AI, revitalized data management, and others.”

He showed dedication to backing the creation of a National Data Park and Compute Center along with other necessary IT facilities for the digital economy. He emphasized Egbin Power’s dependable energy supply, ample space for growth, and an environment favorable for this kind of digital infrastructure.

We are here to endorse the development of the Data Park or any necessary IT infrastructure for the digital economy,” he stated. “We possess dependable power supply, suitable land, and an appropriate setting.

Adesina mentioned that following the takeover, considerable investments and technological innovations have been implemented to revitalize the facility. Additionally, expansion plans are being considered with the aim of doubling its output capacity.

The CEO of Egbin Power, Mokhtar Bounour, emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining steady electricity production for the national grid despite the obstacles present within the power sector.
