DRDL carried out extensiveActive Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor tests lasting over 1,000 seconds on April 25, 2025, at the recently constructed advanced Scramjet Connect Test Facility located in Hyderabad, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Defence.

The ground-based test follows up on an initial trial conducted back in January 2025, which lasted for approximately 120 seconds. Following this success, the system will quickly advance to comprehensive flight-worthy combustor tests.

“Hypersonic Cruise Missile is a class of weapons that can travel more than five times the speed of sound (> 6100 Kmph) for long duration and is powered by Air breathing engine. Air breathing propulsion systems, having supersonic combustion, plays a critical role for long-duration cruise conditions,” the release read.

This test examines the design of a long-duration scramjet combustor along with the associated test facility. It represents the result of collaborative efforts undertaken for this purpose.
