New Delhi [India], April 11 (ANI): As part of her speech at the NITI Aayog, Debjani Ghosh, who previously served as the president of the industry group Nasscom, addressed attendees.
Carnegie Global Tech Summit
On Friday, we explored the AI landscape in India and discussed how the nation can capitalize on the opportunities presented by this advancing technology.
At the outset, Ghosh mentioned that she believes there is minimal comprehension and consensus regarding the actual developments within the AI sector and its future direction.
“What we do understand is that the rate of evolution is unprecedented. The norms of competition are undergoing significant revision due to shifting dynamics. Despite this, I think we’re only at the beginning stages, and the way these changes will unfold along with the evolving rules will likely transform dramatically in the coming years,” Ghosh added.
Debjani Ghosh serves as a distinguished fellow at the NITI Aayog and is the principal figure behind the establishment of the NITI Frontier Tech Hub. Over her extensive 28-year career, she has assumed significant leadership positions—becoming the inaugural woman to head Intel’s South Asian division and the initial female president of Nasscom from April 2018 through November 2024.
Ghosh suggests that this is an ideal moment to master the skill of envisioning possibilities and to determine what one aims to become in the future or how they wish to mold their destiny.
She suggested three things in particular that India must do to fully leverage AI opportunity.
Included among these were focusing on critical supply chains and increasing investment in their research and development, turning renewable energy into a strategic and competitive strength for India, along with the necessity of establishing a framework centered around enhancing both human and planetary well-being.
“We must become the foundation for the cheapest and cleanest global energy sources… China is outpacing us once more. We need to consider an innovative approach,” she emphasized, highlighting the importance of capitalizing on renewable energy opportunities.
“India, I think, is tremendously well-placed to drive that thinking. Everything we have done evolves around human centricity,” she added.
“These are the three areas I believe India should prioritize and concentrate on—not merely to cause disruption, but also to take charge and influence the direction, story, and benchmarks that will define this field moving forward,” she went on to say.
In the course of the same panel discussion, Brendan Dowling, who serves as the Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia, emphasized that everyone has a responsibility to become more proactive in participating in discussions about technology and geopolitics.
“This is an international collaboration we must participate in. Not only has Australia contributed to enhancing our country’s resilience, but we’ve also prioritized this as a key aspect of our foreign policy—to bolster regional stability and security based on a groundwork that ensures reliable technology, because trust in these technologies will become ever more integral to our ongoing discussions,” Dowling noted.
