Apple Reintroduces Slide Over Multitasking with iPadOS 26.1
Positive Outlook on iPadOS 26 Despite Mixed Reactions
The debut of iPadOS 26 has generally been met with favorable feedback; however, some users have expressed disappointment regarding the removal of the long-established Slide Over multitasking feature. In a recent announcement, Apple confirmed that Slide Over will make a comeback in the upcoming iPadOS 26.1 update, which is currently available in beta form.
What is Slide Over?
For those unfamiliar, the Slide Over feature allows users to seamlessly slide an application in and out from the side of the screen. This multitasking tool facilitates quick access to various apps without the need to rearrange the workspace. Its return is a welcome change for many users reliant on smooth multitasking capabilities.
Changes in iPadOS 26
In the latest version, Apple eliminated the Split View feature, but the new windowing system was designed to offer similar functionality. However, the absence of the Slide Over feature had left users frustrated, particularly those who appreciated its convenience for quick app access.
New Enhancements and Limitations
The reintroduced Slide Over has been revamped to integrate with the latest windowing framework. Significant enhancements allow users to resize app windows and adjust their aspect ratios at ease. Furthermore, by swiping to the right, users can completely conceal the apps from view, enhancing workspace organization.
Nevertheless, there is a notable limitation in the updated feature. Unlike previous versions of iPadOS, users can only maintain one active app within the Slide Over interface. Earlier versions, such as iPadOS 18, offered the ability to switch between multiple applications in the Slide Over window, a functionality that has been omitted in the latest iteration.
Compatibility and Future Updates
Given the extensive redesign of multitasking capabilities in iPadOS 26, it appears that the classic Slide Over behavior may no longer align with the current system architecture. Engadget has reached out to Apple for further clarification on these changes and will provide updates as they become available.
With these adjustments, Apple aims to enhance the multitasking experience on its devices while ensuring user satisfaction with the evolving iPadOS capabilities. Stay tuned for ongoing updates and further functionality improvements in future releases.
