The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC) has announced that the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project is currently 72 percent complete.
Mr. Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, made this disclosure during the 2025 iteration of the Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (OLEF), which took place in Abuja yesterday.
The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), represented by the Executive Vice President of Upstream operations, Mr. Udobong Ntia, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to utilizing technology and promoting local content development as key drivers for Nigeria’s energy transformation.
He stated: “Following Nigeria’s energy transition strategy aimed at reaching net-zero emissions by 2060, NNPC Limited has launched multiple initiatives centered around natural gas. This encompasses growing our Autogas initiative to serve more than one million cars by 2026, along with advancing key infrastructural projects such as the AKK pipeline, currently approximately 72% finished. Our objective is for this project to be entirely completed by early 2026.”
Ojulari emphasized that ensuring energy security for Nigeria’s more than 200 million people is non-negotiable. He further stated that the NNPC is playing a role in diversifying the country’s power supply through initiatives like the 1-gigawatt BiIPP-JV stages one and two, 650 megawatts from the FarmJV project, along with a 50-megawatt emergency power station in Maiduguri.
“I want to stress that ensuring energy security for more than 200 million Nigerians is not up for discussion. The NNPC plays a crucial part in the power sector and remains committed to investing in infrastructure that bolsters our nation’s energy grid,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, the head of NNPC praised the execution of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) in 2021, calling it a “landmark achievement” that transformed NNPC Limited into a commercially viable company ready to compete on an international scale.
He emphasized that cultivating local content is a key strategic focus for the organization.
He disclosed that the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGIC) Act has spurred more than $10 billion worth of local value creation since 2020, with a considerable number of NNPC’s project elements now procured domestically.
Previously, Engr. Amina Danmadami, Chairperson of the SPE Nigeria Council, highlighted the significance of OLEF from its beginning in 1991.
As she stated, “‘Driving Energy Sustainability Through Technology, Policy, and Supply Chain Excellence’ represents what we’re experiencing this year. Even as global trends shift towards renewable sources, oil and gas continue to be crucial for maintaining Nigeria’s economic balance and ensuring reliable energy supplies. Therefore, our objective should focus on improving rather than eliminating these sectors.'”
Danmadami highlighted the importance of policy and technology in attaining sustainability, urging for strong execution of the PIA and enhanced funding for bolstering supply chain resilience.
Additionally, Alhaji Ahmad Aminu, the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), emphasized PTDF’s dedication to fostering capacity development and innovation within the energy industry.
