On Sunday, Egypt officially opened the headquarters of the African Space Agency (AfSA) within the Egyptian Space City in Cairo.
“At the inauguration ceremony, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated that Egypt has put significant effort into establishing this agency, reflecting the vision encapsulated in ‘The Africa We Want,’ as detailed in the African Union’s Agenda 2063,” he noted.
He stressed that the organization aims to act as a hub for boosting collaboration between African nations in applying space technology peacefully, sharing knowledge, developing skills, and consolidating Africa’s stance in global arenas, notably at the UN level.
Abdelatty emphasized the significance of the organization’s willingness to collaborate with research institutes, universities, and global space agencies. This approach aims to build a robust foundation for space science and technology within Africa.
As for Sherif Sedky, the CEO of the Egyptian Space Agency, he stated that the opening of the AfSA represents a crucial landmark in African history.
“The AfSA will act as a lighthouse of innovation, cooperation, and advancement for every African nation,” he stated.
In the meantime, Huan Yiheng, co-founder of MinoSpace—a Beijing-based firm specializing in cutting-edge small satellite technologies—stated that this organization serves as a crucial platform for African countries to collaboratively advance their space technology capabilities.
Huan informed Xinhua that they aim to investigate possible collaboration with the AfSA and various African nations.
Upon its establishment, the AfSA will serve as the main organization facilitating Africa’s collaboration in space activities with Europe and other global partners. One key aim of the AfSA is to boost space endeavors throughout Africa, guaranteeing better utilization of data, information, services, and products derived from space technology.
In 2019, Egypt was chosen as the host country for the AfSA by the African Union following its fulfillment of essential political and technical requirements.
