A report indicates that Morocco is emerging as a prime target for cyberattacks due to current geopolitical tensions.
The
Institute for Policy Analysis in Morocco
(MIPA) cautioned that Morocco’s increasing digital footprint and dependency on information technology are rendering the nation more susceptible to cyber threats, describing it as a ripe environment for potential cyber attacks.
These incidents were highlighted by recent cyberattacks carried out by Algerian hackers against the CNSS and various Moroccan organizations, with government spokesman Mustapha Baitas attributing these actions to “hostile entities” connected to Morocco’s increasing diplomatic progress regarding the Sahara issue. These cyber assaults took place around the same time as the United States reiterated its acknowledgment of Moroccan authority over the region—Baitas referred to this stance from the U.S. as a significant triumph for diplomacy.
The MIPA report, entitled “Cybersecurity in Morocco: Progress and Perils,” pointed out that political reasons might encourage malicious entities to aim at the Moroccan administration. Additionally, the nation’s growing economic landscape and technological framework render it an appealing objective for cybercriminals looking to acquire monetary resources or proprietary information.
Continuing regional disputes increase this danger, with threat actors exploiting weaknesses for their tactical advantage. Additionally, the document cautions about nation-state sponsored cyber-espionage targeting governmental organizations and enterprises, along with attacks motivated purely by financial gains.
Citing the 2022 African Cyber-Threat Assessment Report from Interpol, the MIPA stated that Morocco topped the list of African countries impacted by banking trojans and stealer malware, logging 18,827 attacks—which exceeded those in South Africa and Nigeria—and highlighted numerous significant cybersecurity events in Morocco dating back to 2012.
The report highlighted that as cyber threats advance, maintaining an edge necessitates continual adjustment, adherence to worldwide benchmarks, and persistent funding in technological infrastructure, personnel development, along with cooperative efforts at both countrywide and cross-border levels to sustain a strong cybersecurity stance.
Improving Morocco’s cybersecurity necessitates tackling various significant hurdles, notably the insufficient understanding and schooling regarding cyber threats, as indicated by the source, resulting in inadequate security measures and exposed systems.
Additionally, there is a shortage of skilled professionals to tackle evolving cyber threats, and many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as public institutions, face budget constraints when it comes to investing in robust cybersecurity measures.
The report contended that regulatory and compliance shortcomings impede advancement, citing inadequate laws, weak punishments, and misalignment with global benchmarks.
To tackle these issues, Morocco needs to implement an integrated strategy encompassing individuals, companies, governmental organizations, and cyber security experts.
The report highlighted that by promoting a culture of cybersecurity, Morocco could enhance its overall security stance, safeguard essential infrastructures, and reduce vulnerabilities linked to cyber dangers. Key elements include working together, increasing knowledge, and taking preemptive actions to create a safer online space within the nation.
