In this new setup, Filoni will maintain his position as chief creative officer while also taking on the presidency of the studio. Lynwen Brennan, who has been with Lucasfilm since 1999 and most recently served as president and general manager of the business, will assume the role of co-president.
“My love of storytelling was shaped by the films of Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas,” Filoni stated. “I never dreamed I would be privileged to learn the craft of filmmaking from both of them. From Rey to Grogu, Kathy has overseen the greatest expansion in Star Wars storytelling onscreen that we have ever seen.”
Filoni has been with Lucasfilm since 2005 and is currently involved with several projects in development; he’s the showrunner for the second season of Ahsoka and is also a writer and producer on the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu. He’s stepping into this new role at a critical time as Star Wars prepares to return to theaters after a number of delays. The Mandalorian & Grogu is slated for a theatrical release on May 22nd, while the Shawn Levy-directed Starfighter is scheduled for 2027.
Kathleen Kennedy has been president since 2012, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, and was chosen for the role by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Before her time at Lucasfilm, she produced iconic films such as E.T. and Jurassic Park, and she will continue as a producer on both the Mandalorian film and Starfighter.
“It has been a true privilege to spend more than a decade working alongside the extraordinary talent at Lucasfilm,” Kennedy said in a statement. “Their creativity and dedication have been an inspiration, and I’m deeply proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I’m excited to continue developing films and television with both long-time collaborators and fresh voices who represent the future of storytelling.”
