Can a Social App Reverse the Damage of Social Media?

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Pinterest co-founder Evan Sharp have successfully secured new funding for their social media startup, West Co.

The startup kicked off with an invite-only version of its first app, Tangle, back in November. Recently, the Financial Times gathered more insights from comments made by Stone and Sharp, along with regulatory filings and job listings.

According to reports, the company has raised $29 million, led by Spark Capital in its seed funding round.

Sharp, who is the CEO, stated that West Co. was born from the question, “What could I build that might help address just some of the terrible devastation of the human mind and heart that we’ve wrought the last 15 years?”

The initial answer comes in the form of an app that prompts users with the question, “What’s your intention for today?” Users are encouraged to share their goals with friends, with the hope of helping them “plan with intention, capture the reality of their days, and see the deeper threads that shape their life.”

Stone mentioned to the FT that the app might undergo significant changes before its full public launch.
