The launch of Switch 2 comes with a lineup of classic GameCube games for subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Just like when titles from the NES, SNES, N64, and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive were added, Nintendo has introduced a spot-on replica of the original GameCube controller, ensuring you can enjoy those nostalgic games in the most authentic way possible.
For those who gamed during the GameCube era, it feels a bit surreal to have a wireless version of the original controller that’s not the bulkier WaveBird model. It’s a welcome change, and you’ll find that old muscle memory kicks in quickly. For younger gamers, the unique shape of the controller may seem unusual at first, especially with its small C-Stick and distinctly rounded shoulder triggers. But after just a few races in F-Zero GX, you’ll see how perfectly designed the controller was for its games.
In this updated version, Nintendo has made some minor tweaks, adding controls specific to the Switch 2—like the Home, screenshot, and C buttons—at the top of the controller, along with a new ZL button on the left shoulder. This makes the GameCube pad somewhat compatible with certain modern Switch and Switch 2 games, although it’s not an exact fit. The Start button resembles the Switch 2’s plus (+) button, but there’s no equivalent for the minus (-) button, and it doesn’t include newer features like clickable thumbsticks.
However, availability is a challenge for this controller. It can only be purchased directly from Nintendo’s online store, and you must have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to buy it. In the US, there’s a limit of one unit per account, whereas in the UK, you can buy two per account.
