Airbus Orders Software Update for Thousands of Planes to Address Solar Radiation Risk

Flights worldwide faced delays and cancellations after Airbus announced required fixes for 6,000 of its A320 series aircraft, as reported by The Guardian.

The company is taking this step because an investigation into a recent incident involving an A320 Family plane showed that intense solar radiation could interfere with data essential for flight controls.

According to industry sources cited by Reuters, this incident occurred on October 30 during a JetBlue flight from Cancun, Mexico, to Newark, New Jersey, where the aircraft suddenly lost altitude and needed to make an emergency landing in Tampa.

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency airworthiness directive mandating that the affected planes revert to previous software versions before they can resume flights. Additionally, a smaller group of aircraft will require hardware changes, according to Airbus.
