Organic bedding brand Coyuchi has launched its first organic mattress, blending cotton, wool, and Dunlop latex over individually wrapped coils. While I have enjoyed Coyuchi’s linen sheets, I was initially hesitant to try their mattress since bedding doesn’t always equate to mattress expertise. Thankfully, Coyuchi’s Natural REM Mattress exceeded my expectations. It offers a lovely, supportive firmness that works well for those who shift between sleeping positions—whether on their side, back, or stomach. I never felt uncomfortable.
The design features encased coils on a wool pad, with layers of smaller coils, latex, and wool, topped with an organic cotton cover. I was pleasantly surprised by the strong edge support and effective motion isolation for a mattress of this style. Coyuchi mentions that the Natural REM can be placed on a box spring or directly on the floor. I tested it for a few months on a box spring and then for a week on the floor without noticing any difference. At 11 inches thick, there’s enough room for a topper if desired, but I found it wasn’t necessary.
The cotton and wool layers are GOTS-certified organic, and the Dunlop latex boasts GOLS certification. The materials are undyed, which is a plus for anyone sensitive to industrial dyes. Like many organic products, Coyuchi’s mattress is made without chemicals, foam, or adhesive. Crafted to order in the United States, it comes with a 100-night trial period, allowing you to return it for a full refund if it isn’t the right fit for you.
