On Sunday, SpaceX successfully launched an additional 56 Starlink satellites using separate Falcon 9 rockets, marking a significant achievement by surpassing 10,000 satellites deployed into low Earth orbit (LEO). This accomplishment occurred during the 132nd Falcon 9 mission of 2025, equaling the previous annual launch record with more than two months remaining in the year.

Operational Satellites Count

According to calculations by satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell, approximately 8,608 of the deployed satellites are currently operational. The Starlink satellites possess an expected lifespan of around five years, after which they are intentionally de-orbited to disintegrate in the Earth’s atmosphere. The first prototypes of Starlink satellites were launched in February 2018, preceding the service’s commercial debut in 2021.

Future Plans for Satellite Deployment

SpaceX holds regulatory approval to launch a total of 12,000 satellites, with aspirations to expand its constellation to over 30,000 units. This initiative aims to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access across the globe, particularly in underserved regions.

Competitive Landscape in Satellite Internet

Other companies, including Amazon with its Project Kuiper, as well as efforts in Europe and China, are developing their own satellite constellations. This surge in satellite launches has sparked discussions regarding potential overcrowding in space and the associated risks for existing and future space missions.

As SpaceX continues to expand its satellite network, the landscape for global internet accessibility is set to evolve dramatically, making advancements in technology and international cooperation critical to managing the increased satellite presence in Earth’s orbit.
