Currently, Playground focuses on enabling users to design intuitive widgets, such as flight trackers, meeting reminders, and virtual pets. Users can start from scratch or customize existing applications on the Essential Apps platform. More technically inclined individuals have the option to modify the underlying code for enhanced functionality.
Limitations of Playground
It is important to note that, for the time being, Nothing has not permitted developers to create full-screen applications due to the current limitations of the technology.

This announcement comes shortly after Nothing successfully secured $200 million in funding, spearheaded by Tiger Global. Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, has expressed a vision of developing an operating system infused with AI capabilities and innovative AI-centric devices.
Speaking with TechCrunch, Pei highlighted the slow evolution of software within the smartphone sector. "It’s concerning that software improvements lag behind," he remarked. "Many manufacturers tend to emulate established giants like Apple, opting for a safer route. The pace of software evolution is notably slow."
Pei is optimistic about the transformative potential of AI, asserting that operating systems will evolve to become more personalized. "Our devices possess a wealth of contextual information about us that is underutilized," he added.
Current Offerings
As of now, Nothing’s portfolio includes only one AI-centric application: Essential Space. This app allows users to share screenshots, record voice notes, and transcribe meeting discussions. It is important to note that many mainstream smartphone operating systems already offer similar functionalities, and users can easily install AI applications on their devices.
Market Position and Competitive Edge
Although Nothing has gained some recognition in the smartphone market, it still holds less than 1% of global market share according to analytics firm IDC, making it a small player compared to industry giants like Apple, Samsung, and Google. Despite this, Pei believes that Nothing’s smaller size gives it a unique advantage. He has previously mentioned the intent to engineer hardware specifically designed for AI applications.
Security and User Experience
Vibe coding presents promising potential, yet previous attempts by other apps to offer similar functionalities have fallen short, as noted by analytics firm AppFigures. Concerns over security and maintenance play a significant role in this lack of success. Pei acknowledged these challenges, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high security standards while enabling developers to create applications.
"We have millions of users relying on our devices, so any service we provide must be user-friendly and error-resistant. Therefore, ensuring security within these applications is a top priority for us," he stated.

At present, Nothing is not charging for access to these AI tools, and there are no immediate plans for a paid tier. Pei has indicated that the focus will remain on cultivating an engaged community around Playground and acknowledging valuable contributions made by users.
