Ostensibly, plant lovers should be the easiest people to shop for. Just get them a plant, right? Wrong. (Well, most of the time.) I review indoor hydroponic gardens for WIRED and have been a proud plant parent for almost 30 years, so I can tell you that even if you have a running mental catalog of all your recipient’s houseplants and know which ones they don’t yet have, you might still be unclear about what they have space for or what kind of pot or substrate they prefer.
In general, the best gifts are those that remind them of the plants they love or that help them care for their green friends. However, if you’re absolutely certain that your recipient would love a plant, we’ve included a few mail-order options from companies we’ve tried and recommend, like a lucky jade plant or a fruit tree that produces edible fruit.
